How to register custom name servers

If you wish to have your own custom name servers, then you need to register them at your domain registrar.  For example, if you own domain.com and you want to register ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com, then you would need to tell your registrar what IP addresses those nameservers resolve to.

Here are a few common domain registrar’s, and how to register the name servers.

 

Enom

  • Login to your account
  • Click on Domains
  • Click on Advanced Tools
  • Under “Register a new nameserver” fill in the following 2 fields
    • Nameserver: ns1.domain.com
    • IP Address: the IP address to your primary nameserver
  • Repeat the above steps to also do ns2.domain.com

 

GoDaddy

If you have less then 6 domains use these steps

  • Login to your account
  • Click on Manage beside Domains
  • Click on settings (should look like a gear wheel with a down arrow beside it)
  • Click on Domain Details
  • Under Hostnames, click on Manage
  • Click on Add one now
  • Add the new nameserver name (ns1.domain.com) and the new nameserver IP address (the IP address to your nameserver)
  • Click on save
  • Repeat the steps above to add ns2.domain.com

 

If you have more the 6 domains, use these steps

  • Login to your account
  • Choose the domain you want to use
  • Under Hostnames click on Manage
  • Click on Add one now
  • Add the new nameserver name (ns1.domain.com) and the new nameserver IP address (The IP address to your nameserver)
  • Click on save
  • Repeat the steps above to add ns2.domain.com

 

Network Solutions

  • Login to your account
  • Click on Manage Host Servers at the bottom of the left hand menu
  • Under enter the nameserver you want to create or edit type in the new nameserver (ns1.domain.com)
  • Click Go
  • In the next window, it will ask for the IP address.  It may already have the IP address you need.  If not, enter the new IP address
  • Click Go
  • Double check the settings, then click on save changes.
  • Repeat the steps to add ns2.domain.com

Register.com

  • Login to your account
  • Click on the domain name you are going to create the nameservers for
  • Click on Manage registered name servers
  • Scroll down to Register Name Server
  • Enter the desired prefix for the domain (IE: ns1)
  • Enter the IP address  for the nameserver
  • Click Continue
  • Repeat the steps above to add ns2

Namecheap

  • Login to your account
  • Click on your username – it will be on the black bar located at the top of the page
  • Click on Manage Domains and then click on the domain name you want to edit
  • Click on Nameserver Registration in the left side menu.
  • Select the prefix you wish to use from the drop down list (ns1) and then enter the IP address for the nameserver
  • Click on Add Nameservers
  • Repeat the steps above to add ns2

OpenSRS

  • Login to your account
  • Click on Name Servers
  • At the bottom of the page, click on the click here link that says: If you want to create or modify a nameserver which is based on domain.com click here
  • Under Create Name Server enter the prefix (ns1) and the IP address
  • Click on Create Nameserver
  • Repeat the steps above to add ns2
